This ritual can be done on a windy day, a day with a light breeze, or indoors with no wind at all. It is not intended to actually bring wind but to summon the energy of the four winds whenever you need it. The four winds each have a purpose:
There was Boreas, the North Wind. He comes rushing from the mountains, fierce, cold and unrelenting. He is the bringer of winter. His temper changes landscapes.
There was Notus, the South Wind. He brought the humid, heavy air associated with storms and the swelling of the sea. He brought the heat of summer.
And there is Eurus, the East Wind. Unlike his brothers, he does not bring a season; he brings change. He is at the crossroads, the moment before we leap.
Then there was Zephyrus, the West Wind. He is the wind of spring. His breeze carries the seeds, pollen, and possibility. He is the wind of poets as he is the wind of moving on.
Here is what you’ll need:
A compass or knowledge of the cardinal directions
Four small items to represent each wind (ideas below)
Your breath
Your voice
Optional representations:
North (Boreas): a stone or ice cube
South (Notus): a match, candle, or dried herb
East (Eurus): feather or incense
West (Zephyrus): flower, leaf, or small bowl of water
Step 1. Create a Circle: Stand or sit in the center of your space. Mark the directions with your chosen items, or simply turn to face each direction as you call.
Step 2. Ground: Take a few deep breaths. Feel the earth beneath you. Feel the air moving around you.
Step 3. Call the Winds
Face North. Say:
Boreas, Wind of the North, cold and clear, I call to you.
Bring strength, bring endurance, bring the power to stand tall.
Face South. Say:
Notus, Wind of the South, heavy and wild, I call to you.
Bring passion, bring fire, bring the courage to transform.
Face East. Say:
Eurus, Wind of the East, unseen and shifting, I call to you.
Bring change, bring clarity, bring the power of the unknown.
Face West. Say:
Zephyrus, Wind of the West, gentle and true, I call to you.
Bring love, bring new beginnings, carry me where I’m meant to go.
Step 4. Feel & Listen: Pause. Notice how the air moves. If you’re outside, open your senses. If you’re indoors, imagine the winds swirling in.
Step 5. Speak Your Intention: Say aloud what you are ready to move, shift, or receive.
Step 6. Close with Gratitude: Turn in a full circle, honoring each wind with a nod. “Thank you, Winds. You are free to go or stay.”
Let the ritual end naturally. Sit in the stillness, walk, or journal what came through.
