If you come to the island of Aeaea, the island of myth, and you walk across the beach into the woods, you may discover the witch they call Circe.
Circe lives in a stone mansion on Aeaea and rules there from her throne. There in the woods she is surrounded by her menagerie of animals, namely, lions, bears, and wolves.
Circe, the Witch of Greek Mythology, is known for her knowledge of plants and potions, shape shifting, and magical talents.
Some accounts say that she is the daughter of the Goddess Witch, Hecate. Others say that she is the daughter of Helios and the Oceanid nymph Perse.
She is called an enchantress and the earliest mention of a magical wand or staff in Western writings is Circe’s staff called the rhabdos. This is how she channels her magic.
Circe was famous for turning her enemies into wild animals. She is a magnetic figure. She is both alluring, but knows her boundaries.
She is a symbol of the powerful feminine and a revered goddess by witches globally.
One of the most famous tales of Circe is her appearance in Homer’s epic story, The Odyssey.
When Odysseus reaches the island of Aeaea, they at first think they have arrived on a desolate island. All they can see is a plume of smoke climbing above the trees from deep in the woods.
The men decide to investigate, and when they reach the dwelling of Circe, they discover a myriad of creatures, lions and wolves, acting as pets.
The explorers hear a woman singing, Circe.
Circe gives them libations, and with a flick of her wand, turns all the men into pigs.
Odysseus comes upon Hermes in the woods who helps him evade Circe’s spells.
Circe and Odysseus fall into a love affair and the two stay together for a year there on the island after making Circe swear that she won’t harm his party and that the men can be returned from their transformations.
They have three children together.
Odysseus eventually leaves the island after becoming restless to see his mortal wife, Penelope.
