A Norse Goddess of winter, Skadi was a fierce jötunn (a giantess) who thrived in the darkest places that no man could even survive.

The legends say she lived in the highest part of the northern mountains—a land so harsh, so bitter, and so cold that the snow there never melted. Her home was the beating heart of winter, and she, its master.

But where her story really begins to take shape is just after the death of her father, Thjazi, when Skadi famously becomes consumed by revenge.

As the myth goes, Skadi charges into Asgard—the realm of the Gods—hellbent on exacting her vengeance.

But what she finds in those Asgard halls isn’t blood, but companionship.

For you see, the Gods, after meeting the furious Skadi in her full battle armor, propose a deal that would spare both sides any bloodshed. Skadi could take a husband of her choosing from any of the Asgardian gods as penance for her father’s death—giving her not only a powerful companion, but also elevating her status to goddess!

And though she had wanted nothing more than her revenge, this deal appealed to Skadi very much. She knew her father could never come back, but bettering her life could be another way to honor his passing.

But there was a catch!

Skadi had to select the god by only looking at his feet—she was forbidden to gaze upon their face in order to choose the god of her pleasing.

And so, despite these conditions, Skadi agreed—secretly hoping she’d select the very handsome, Baldur, god of beauty. She determined that she could make this pairing work is if she chose the most handsome feet—for surely the most handsome feet would be attached to the most handsome god!

But unfortunately for Skadi, this was not the case.

The feet she chose belonged to Njord, the god of the sea—who wasn’t very handsome at all.

But his lack of beauty was not the problem in this pairing.

Not long after marrying, Skadi found herself deeply unhappy with her new husband.
For you see, he was the god of the sea—and so, he had to live by the waters edge.
But Skadi—a being of the mountains—was not made for a life by the sea. And soon found that this southern living did nothing but tear her icy heart apart.

And just as swiftly as it had begun, her marriage to Njord had ended.

But this was far from the end of Skadi!

The cold yet impassioned Goddess of winter would go on to continue her legacy of ferocity and fearlessness—defending the mountains, wandering the wilderness, and even marrying another Asgardian down the line.

Skadi, goddess of the wintry wild, would not soon be forgotten.

For she always was (and still is) the howling echo between icy-branched trees, the teasing bite of a harsh-lipped wind, and the hot-cold heart at the center of the darkest winter days.
