As we continue along on The Fools journey, we encounter The Emperor. This masculine energy greets us sternly, anxious to tell us the rules and the laws of the road we are traveling.

He is the keeper of the order and the firm hand that holds society accountable and structured. He is Saturn energy and serves a vital role on our path. Following his counterpart, The Empress, whom we met with warm loving earth mother energy; The Emperor is the opposite. He is limits and boundaries, fact and law. When we meet him we are reminded that while water flowing freely is a beautiful thing, it relies on the banks and the earth to guide it. We too need this grounding and guidance.

When The Emperor appears to you in your reading, he can speak to a time when you are embodying authoritative and leadership energy. He is the father figure in the tarot, the epitome of responsibility, and can show up when you are called to embrace that role or archetype. Are you providing for others? Are you in a place where you are the financial provider or protective energy? Perhaps this is something you are searching for. The spread you chose will answer those questions for you. The Emperor is strong and powerful and his presence is demanding.

Reversed, we see the shadow side of this strong father figure. We see an energy that is controlling, dominating and paranoid. There can be a high level of stress over the structure and boundaries he is made to manage and he can appear to be overly disciplinary. Is this you?

When The Emperor appears reversed, take a hard look in the mirror and the people and responsibilities in your charge. How are you expressing your Emperor energy? How is this expression making those around you feel?  In another way, The Emperor reversed can speak to a time when you are not asserting yourself in the way that you need to. This can speak to be somewhat of a pushover or submissive. Again the spread, the question and the intent will guide you on its true meaning.
