Following The Chariot in the Tarot, we come upon card 8, which is Strength. Strength is one of the more literal cards in the Tarot and represents exactly what it says it does- a time in your life when you are feeling capable and strong. In the traditional art of the Rider Waite deck, we see a woman depicted holding open the mouth of a lion. She appears relaxed, and the image gives the feeling as if the lion is willingly opening his jars for her. There is no force, he is happily yawning, and she is gently holding back his head.

It is as if she has tamed him with her sheer will and kindness. This imagery speaks to the inner strength we all possess as opposed to the brute strength one would expect is needed to tame such a wild beast. When this card appears on your table, the universe is telling you that you are capable. You have the fortitude and the strength to conquer whatever challenge you are about to meet. It is a reminder that the path to this success lies in the strength of your kindness, your willpower, your disposition, and your inner gifts; not your outer. Force will not work here. This is a time to be calm, collected, and calculated.

Reversed, the energy of this card is stifled, and it is time to check in with yourself. Are you feeling that inner strength that Strength Upright brings to your table? Or are you feeling a bit weak and unsure? When she appears reversed, it’s time to take stock and see what is causing any feelings of insecurity or inability to take the reigns and take control of the situation around you Take a look at the influences and situations in your life and make whatever changes are necessary to flip this card around and allow you to reassert yourself, and take back control.
