The Flower Chamomile
Chamomile is a delicate, small flower with a puffy yellow center and small, elongated white petals that grow downward away from the center. It comes from the daisy-like flowers of the Asteraceae plant family. There are two plants that are cultivated and sold commercially as chamomile, German chamomile and English or Roman chamomile. These plants can grow anywhere from 6-24 inches tall.
The flower heads of chamomile are typically the only part of the flower that is used. Chamomile is often found in tea, as it is a lovely caffeine-free alternative to black or green tea, and has an earthy, somewhat sweet flavor profile. Chamomile is additionally used in tinctures, infusions, skin care, and bath soaks.
Healing Properties
Although more commonly known for its calming properties, chamomile has been documented for centuries as a popular herb and bitter for stomach issues. It is said to stimulate digestion, relieve stomach cramps, and protect against nausea due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Its ability to relieve inflammation makes chamomile a great addition to a warm compress. When used properly, it has also been known to speed the healing of cuts and scrapes, as well as soothe eczema and other skin irritations. This ancient herb’s gentle yet effective nature makes it suitable to use with children. Many parents give their children chamomile before long car rides to keep them calm and prevent car-sickness.
Traditionally, chamomile has been known to aid in soothing the nerves, easing tempers, and relaxing the body. According to Health Line, it contains apigenin, an antioxidant that binds certain receptors in your brain that may promote sleepiness and reduce insomnia. Some studies have shown that chamomile tea could help ease anxiety symptoms and mental stress. It is said one should drink a cup of warm chamomile tea with milk and honey before bed, especially those who have trouble falling or staying asleep. When used as a tea ingredient, herbalists suggest pairing it with lemon balm for sleep, peppermint for headaches, and rose hips when you’re experiencing feelings of sadness or grief.
Magickal Lore & Uses
Egyptians held the chamomile flower in high regard, using the crushed petals as part of their beautifying regimen. They dedicated the herb to their sun god, Ra, and believed it brought luck and prosperity. The sun is the planetary correspondence of chamomile according to many witches and pagans. It’s also associated with the sign of Leo and the element of water. It is believed to help cleanse and invigorate the throat chakra.
Today, we still honor chamomile and use its magickal properties in a number of ways. It is most commonly used in rituals relating to money, meditation, love, peace, and tranquility.
